{"id":11765,"date":"2023-02-02T11:43:56","date_gmt":"2023-02-02T10:43:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bio-uv.com\/?post_type=news&#038;p=11765"},"modified":"2024-01-09T11:45:47","modified_gmt":"2024-01-09T10:45:47","slug":"bio-sea-prevents-access-to-cyber-hackers-looking-for-an-entry-point-into-ship-systems","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.bio-uv.com\/en\/news\/bio-sea-prevents-access-to-cyber-hackers-looking-for-an-entry-point-into-ship-systems\/","title":{"rendered":"BIO-SEA PREVENTS ACCESS TO CYBER HACKERS LOOKING FOR AN ENTRY POINT INTO SHIP SYSTEMS"},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\"ps-block ps-block--paragraph js-in-view is-animated\">\n  <div class=\"ps-block__container\">\n    <div class=\"ps-block__grid\">\n      <div class=\"ps-block__content\">\n        <div class=\"ps-block__body\">\n          <div class=\"ps-block__item\">\n            \n<p>French UV-based water treatment specialist BIO-UV Group has developed state-of-the-art cyber security software for its BIO-SEA ballast water treatment system ahead of two IACS Unified Requirements set to enter into force next year.<\/p>\n\n          <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"ps-block ps-block--paragraph js-in-view is-animated\">\n  <div class=\"ps-block__container\">\n    <div class=\"ps-block__grid\">\n      <div class=\"ps-block__content\">\n        <div class=\"ps-block__body\">\n          <div class=\"ps-block__item\">\n            \n<p>Like any networked system or control software onboard ship, the ballasting process, including the treatment system, can be susceptible to a cyber attack, with hackers looking for an entry point to a vessel\u2019s Operational Technology (OT) systems.<\/p>\n\n          <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"ps-block ps-block--paragraph js-in-view is-animated\">\n  <div class=\"ps-block__container\">\n    <div class=\"ps-block__grid\">\n      <div class=\"ps-block__content\">\n        <div class=\"ps-block__body\">\n          <div class=\"ps-block__item\">\n            \n<p>Concern is such that the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) adopted in 2021 two new URs to increase the cyber resilience of ships.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/iacs.org.uk\/download\/14104\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UR E26<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/iacs.org.uk\/download\/14105\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UR E27<\/a>&nbsp;will be applied to new ships contracted for construction on and after&nbsp;1 January 2024.<\/p>\n\n          <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"ps-block ps-block--paragraph js-in-view is-animated\">\n  <div class=\"ps-block__container\">\n    <div class=\"ps-block__grid\">\n      <div class=\"ps-block__content\">\n        <div class=\"ps-block__body\">\n          <div class=\"ps-block__item\">\n            \n<p>The requirements are twofold: to ensure the secure integration of equipment into the vessel\u2019s network throughout its operational lifespan; and to make the interface between users and&nbsp;computer-based systems\/equipment more resilient.<\/p>\n\n          <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"ps-block ps-block--paragraph js-in-view is-animated\">\n  <div class=\"ps-block__container\">\n    <div class=\"ps-block__grid\">\n      <div class=\"ps-block__content\">\n        <div class=\"ps-block__body\">\n          <div class=\"ps-block__item\">\n            \n<p>\u201cThis could be a problem for legacy systems,\u201d said Charl\u00e8ne Ceresola, Project manager, BIO-UV Group. \u201cIt\u2019s not the case with a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ballast-water-treatment.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BIO-SEA<\/a>&nbsp;unit, but older ballast water treatment systems can be susceptible to a cyber-attack. If the ballasting system is hacked and pumps operated remotely, ship stability is at risk; a ship could sink, and lives lost. It\u2019s much more than simply an environmental threat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n          <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"ps-block ps-block--paragraph js-in-view is-animated\">\n  <div class=\"ps-block__container\">\n    <div class=\"ps-block__grid\">\n      <div class=\"ps-block__content\">\n        <div class=\"ps-block__body\">\n          <div class=\"ps-block__item\">\n            \n<p>Ceresola said: \u201cWe are following these guidelines and have developed greater cyber secure functions to our software ahead of the requirement. In an increasingly connected and digitised world, every component onboard ship has to be cyber secure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n          <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"ps-block ps-block--paragraph js-in-view is-animated\">\n  <div class=\"ps-block__container\">\n    <div class=\"ps-block__grid\">\n      <div class=\"ps-block__content\">\n        <div class=\"ps-block__body\">\n          <div class=\"ps-block__item\">\n            \n<p>BIO-UV Group completed testing of the new cyber secure function in 2022, with full type approval expected later this year.<\/p>\n\n          <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"ps-block ps-block--paragraph js-in-view is-animated\">\n  <div class=\"ps-block__container\">\n    <div class=\"ps-block__grid\">\n      <div class=\"ps-block__content\">\n        <div class=\"ps-block__body\">\n          <div class=\"ps-block__item\">\n            \n<p>\u201cSoftware development forms a key part of our commitment to going beyond compliance,\u201d said BIO-UV Group\u2019s Maritime Division, BIO-SEA Business Director, Maxime Dedeurwaerder.<\/p>\n\n          <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"ps-block ps-block--paragraph js-in-view is-animated\">\n  <div class=\"ps-block__container\">\n    <div class=\"ps-block__grid\">\n      <div class=\"ps-block__content\">\n        <div class=\"ps-block__body\">\n          <div class=\"ps-block__item\">\n            \n<p>\u201cIn terms of development, what is changing for the industry now is the need for more advanced solutions for remote maintenance; solutions for integrating BWTS with different cabling configurations; and solutions for different water conditions and UV dosage rates.
