However, the appearance of a small amount of bacterial pollution led the city to set up a systematic and continuous chlorination system. In 2016, anxious to offer quality water to its inhabitants, by improving its taste, optimizing the bactericidal efficiency while reducing the olfactory nuisances associated with chlorine, the city launched a call for tenders to find an alternative solution. A request that was part of the precautionary logic closely followed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grand-est.ars.sante.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Regional Health Agency<\/a> and the Haut-Rhin Prefecture, which largely supported the project. She then decided to turn to ultraviolet treatment, a solution that is chemical-free, odorless and does not alter the taste of the water!<\/p>\n\n          <\/div>\n                            <\/div>\n\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/section>\n<section class=\"ps-block ps-block--heading js-in-view is-animated\">\n  <div class=\"ps-block__container\">\n    <div class=\"ps-block__grid\">\n      <div class=\"ps-block__content\">\n        <div class=\"ps-block__body\">\n          <div class=\"ps-block__item\">\n            \n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ultraviolet light, a more efficient and economical alternative to chlorine!<\/h2>\n\n          <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"ps-block ps-block--paragraph js-in-view is-animated\">\n  <div class=\"ps-block__container\">\n    <div class=\"ps-block__grid\">\n      <div class=\"ps-block__content\">\n        <div class=\"ps-block__body\">\n          <div class=\"ps-block__item\">\n            \n<p>Although it is one of the most widely used disinfectants in France, chlorine is likely to form undesirable by-products in the presence of organic matter, which can cause health risks (trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids for example). In addition, chlorine is not very effective on certain parasites such as Cryptosporidium oocysts.<br\/>Associated with water treatment, ultraviolet light has an immediate bactericidal and virucidal action, i.e. it eradicates all bacteria and viruses present in the water by destroying their DNA. Associ\u00e9 \u00e0 un puit de captage, son principe est tr\u00e8s simple. En effet, l\u2019eau pomp\u00e9e est inject\u00e9e automatiquement dans le syst\u00e8me UV (un tube en acier qui renferme dix lampes UV \u00e0 quartz) avant d\u2019\u00eatre renvoy\u00e9e dans le r\u00e9seau de distribution.<br \/>\nLe traitement est pr\u00e9ventif car l\u2019eau brute est trait\u00e9e et d\u00e9sinfect\u00e9e en continu, que des bact\u00e9ries soient pr\u00e9sentes dans l\u2019eau ou non, \u00e0 la diff\u00e9rence d\u2019un traitement curatif mis en \u0153uvre uniquement en cas de probl\u00e8me de la qualit\u00e9 bact\u00e9riologique.<\/p>\n\n          <\/div>\n                            <\/div>\n\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/section>\n<section class=\"ps-block ps-block--heading js-in-view is-animated\">\n  <div class=\"ps-block__container\">\n    <div class=\"ps-block__grid\">\n      <div class=\"ps-block__content\">\n        <div class=\"ps-block__body\">\n          <div class=\"ps-block__item\">\n            \n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Installation of UV treatment devices on all the catchment wells<\/h2>\n\n          <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"ps-block ps-block--paragraph js-in-view is-animated\">\n  <div class=\"ps-block__container\">\n    <div class=\"ps-block__grid\">\n      <div class=\"ps-block__content\">\n        <div class=\"ps-block__body\">\n          <div class=\"ps-block__item\">\n            \n<p>This study required significant work to equip the first underground well, which had little room to integrate the desired system. Taking into account these constraints, BIO-UV equipped this well with medium pressure lamps, more energy consuming but less cumbersome than low pressure lamps.<\/p>\n\n          <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"ps-block ps-block--quote js-in-view is-animated\">\n  <div class=\"ps-block__container\">\n    <div class=\"ps-block__grid\">\n      <div class=\"ps-block__content\">\n        <div class=\"ps-block__body\">\n          <div class=\"ps-block__item\">\n                          \n<p>&#8220;<em>L\u2019\u00e9tude sur le premier puits s\u2019est av\u00e9r\u00e9e concluante. A beautiful project subject to the agreement of the Regional Health Agency and a hydrogeologist responsible for drafting the measures to be implemented during the work.<\/p>\n\n          <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"ps-block ps-block--heading js-in-view is-animated\">\n  <div class=\"ps-block__container\">\n    <div class=\"ps-block__grid\">\n      <div class=\"ps-block__content\">\n        <div class=\"ps-block__body\">\n          <div class=\"ps-block__item\">\n            \n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A successful transition to UV for Mulhouse<\/h2>\n\n          <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"ps-block ps-block--paragraph js-in-view is-animated\">\n  <div class=\"ps-block__container\">\n    <div class=\"ps-block__grid\">\n      <div class=\"ps-block__content\">\n        <div class=\"ps-block__body\">\n          <div class=\"ps-block__item\">\n            \n<p>The BIO-UV facilities were commissioned in early 2019 with no observed operational, performance or treatment failures.<\/p>\n\n          <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"ps-block ps-block--paragraph js-in-view is-animated\">\n  <div class=\"ps-block__container\">\n    <div class=\"ps-block__grid\">\n      <div class=\"ps-block__content\">\n        <div class=\"ps-block__body\">\n          <div class=\"ps-block__item\">\n            \n<p>The BIO-UV Group reactors are controlled by the flow rate of the production wells. The percentage of radiation as well as the status reports are directly transmitted to the city&#8217;s water department, ensuring the control of the reactors&#8217; operation. Water quality monitoring is carried out by a company commissioned by the municipality. The city&#8217;s technical staff also performs a weekly visual inspection of all the sites to check for hydraulic leaks, vibrations or problems that cannot be detected remotely.<\/p>\n\n          <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"ps-block ps-block--paragraph js-in-view is-animated\">\n  <div class=\"ps-block__container\">\n    <div class=\"ps-block__grid\">\n      <div class=\"ps-block__content\">\n        <div class=\"ps-block__body\">\n          <div class=\"ps-block__item\">\n            \n<p>Since then, the distributed water is no longer chlorinated at all. The chlorine dioxide system has been shut down. Nevertheless, to prevent any risk of bacterial contamination in the network, the chlorine injection stations have been kept in order to be active in case of pollution in the network in curative mode.\u00a0<strong>To date, the city of Mulhouse has not resorted to emergency treatment by chlorine injection.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n          <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"ps-block ps-block--quote js-in-view is-animated\">\n  <div class=\"ps-block__container\">\n    <div class=\"ps-block__grid\">\n      <div class=\"ps-block__content\">\n        <div class=\"ps-block__body\">\n          <div class=\"ps-block__item\">\n                          \n<p>&#8220;<em>Nos 8 puits et l\u2019ensemble du r\u00e9seau d\u2019eau de Mulhouse font l\u2019objet de toutes les attentions depuis leur cr\u00e9ation. Ce projet avait un degr\u00e9 de vigilance maximale, une planification et un suivi extr\u00eame pour atteindre la r\u00e9alisation de ce chantier<\/em>, souligne\u00a0<strong>Bernard Roche, Ing\u00e9nieur et Responsable du Bureau d\u2019\u00c9tudes Eaux et Travaux de la ville de Mulhouse.<\/strong> <em>Nous sommes tr\u00e8s satisfaits de pouvoir proposer une eau de qualit\u00e9 et sans odeur aux habitants de notre ville.
